About Us

 North Ashrose Stud history

 2010 - Celebrating 100 years of breeding.

The Ashby Family has a long history of breeding Stud Merinos, dating back to the early 1900’s. The Stud, at Hallett was originally known as Ashrose, and was named after Mary Pluckrose, the wife of W.B. Ashby, who founded the stud in 1910. After a Family restructure in 1996, Graham, Tom & Matt founded North Ashrose as we know it today. Situated centrally between Spalding and Gulnare in a 18 inch rainfall area. From a Collinsville blood base the stud has a solid background of structural soundness and constitution within the ewe flock, their five year micron average being 20.9.North Ashrose has achieved many outstanding and well documented show and sale accolades over the years, but no achievements greater than the performance and success of their Merino Stud bloodline experienced by clients, both stud & commercial within the Merino industry. North Ashrose clients report consistently high returns for their quality wool clip, plus having reputable livestock sales. North Ashrose breeding program is ever evolving with continual assessment and evaluation of market trends as well as breeding technology. The flock is moving forward ensuring clients are securing and  selecting from sheep for the future. These sheep are sound in confirmation have improving carcass and meat traits along with quality well nourished fibre while maintaining fleece weight on a plain-bodied merino.

This consistent breeding has been evident throughout 2009, particularly at RAS in 2009 winning the inaugural White River trophy for Group of Autumn shorn sheep-3 rams & 2 ewes, also the Grand Champion Poll Merino Ram Austral CH25-36 and Grand Champion Autumn shorn Merino ewe. North Ashrose also enjoyed success within the fleece section winning Supreme fleece of the show. 2009 was also the RAS Merino feature breed where North Ashrose was recognized as the most successful exhibitor.

Other highlights of 2009 the Adelaide Ram Sale where North Ashrose offered & sold 9 rams to top the sale of $23000 (PJ40-21) and top average $7833.

North Ashrose On Property Sale 2009, 150 Merino & Poll Merino Rams were offered & sold to a top of $6600 and averaged $1285.

North Ashrose is continually striving for excellence and firmly believe in their solid foundations and integrity, service and reputation with their clients. The purchase of Old North Bungaree in November 2007, North Ashrose has consolidated and extended all areas of the sheep enterprise on this reliable holding in the Mid-North.

In April 2009, Tom Ashby was elected as National President of the Australian Stud Merino Breeders Association and was also elected on the committee of the National Wool Poll Panel. Working in partnership with key stakeholders on issues and trends within the Merino industry to secure a better future for all.
